Apostille or Legalization?

Apostille

An apostille is used for verification purposes in countries participating in the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. This is usually a one step process that can be quickly completed at the Secretary of State’s office.

Legalization

Legalization is used for countries that are not a signatory to the Hague Convention. This is a four-step process known as the “chain authentication method.”

During this method, various seals are placed on the documents in the following steps:

  • Notarization
  • Legalization by the Secretary of State, which is similar to the apostille process
  • Authentication by the U.S. Department of State
  • Authentication by the embassy in the country where the document will be used
